13 Month Anniversary! - Nov 24th
Thats right! 13 months ago on Oct 24th I started posting tracks here and already we're at the 13 month landmark :"). To celebrate in style, simply point your browsers to the following link and access the file with your multimedia player of choice. Peace and chicken grease! -Dave
Nix - Naughts
Edit: If you downloaded this song before 5:30pm on Nov 24th, be sure to redownload. I tweaked a few things especially around the song peak which you won't want to miss.
I feel good, I knew that I would - November 8th
Well I'm still cookin up a storm of crazy electro banger tracks, gettin better each time but they're not quite 'there' yet if you know what I mean. On the other hand, if you like the prog house, it's a good day to be here.
Nix - Ghetto Fresh
Bonus Stage - October 13th
Here's a little something for all us 90s kids, you'll get it.
Nix - Electro Inspector
Tasty tasty update - September 19th
Phew, that was one hell of break between choons but as a bud put it, creative juices often behave like orgasms. Nothing happens for a while and then BANG it all comes out in a flash.
Nix - Skin Deep
Things are doing quite well at the moment and summer is over so there are a lot more updates forecast for sures, cheers for tuning in!
Quoth Jack Black, "That's fuckin teamwork!" - August 5th
Got a collab for you guys! Although I ended up making the whole thing, I was dying to use the artist name. Shouts to Nickerson (man #2) regardless!
Less Than 3 - However
There's also a stormfront of cool stuff on the way (some chill jazzy DnB stuff and dubstep-house for example) so stay tuned superfriends!
I knew them boys was crazy... - August 3rd
My very first good Fidget Electro track! I made it with lots of love and a real attention to detail (unlike the usual half assed glaze over I give the usual stuff amirite?).
Nix - Come Again?
And because I'm musically bipolar, have some trancy progressive house! I hope you like supersaws.
Nix - Iceberg
I Missed You - July 3rd
Just the one song this time, that amazing bit of momentum is all gone :(. On the plus side... uhh... here's this month's update! And quick fyi a buddy gave me the name for the song.
Nix - I Like Nix
Great Success - May 30th
I have a lot of a little bit of everything for everyone today so lets just get down to it.
Nix - All Growed Down
Nix - O Hai
Nix - Aww
Nix - Can Has Prog House
Nix - Tree Court Summons
Topia - Flights of Fancy (Nix Recut)
If you find something that tickles your fancy, pay me with emails to nix@djnix.ca, cheers!
Turn Me Up, Turn Me Down - April 29th
Well it was probably only a matter of time until I did deep house, I think. Maybe there are too many elements and not enough rhodes piano to be deep house and it's actually progressive house. Or it could be tech house, the slow slow buildup, and repetetive nature and lack of real chord progression would say so. Then again it's almost too soft to be tech house, it's more like deep house except...
Nix - Nameless HeroPlus one bonus song for everybody. This is undeniably something new and dangerous, I call it IDM'n'B. Let's all hope it never becomes popular.
Nix - OnaipFor those of you paying attention you might notice these songs are just a little bit quieter than usual, and for good reason.
Turn Me Up.org explains it in full, but here's a shakedown. There's a thing called the loudness wars in the music industry and basically it operates on the fact that the human ear perceives music played louder as better. If you're operating on a market like mainstream radio, you'll take any edge you can get to stand out amongst your peers. So what's happening is songs are getting compressed (squeezed) to death which takes away their precious dynamics (the interplay between two sounds occuring at the same time) and makes the song louder at the cost of quality. Of course I'm not saying we shouldn't have loud music, but that there's no reason to be crushing our music to make it louder when all you have you do it is crank it up!
This Update Brought to you By Pitch Slides - April 17th
Creative output is fucking weird. I wonder a lot what makes my songs the way they are. If it's the music I'm listening to at the time, how I'm feeling, or if it's totally random. To throw things in perspective for you, I made this in 2007:
Nix - SlidesWhich is just a little different from today's update, The spiritual successor to "
Nix - Maybe". This one wrote itself in the space of just a few hours and if you can handle it, is a major trip.
Nix - Definitely
And he told me what to do. He told me... - April 4th
Well I don't have a lot of music to show for March but I did get a ton done. I came down with a bad case of the OCD or something and one by one I made sure I: renamed all of my music files to reflect the ID Tags (eg. Artist - Song Name.mp3), converted everything to mp3 if it wasn't already, and tagged each song with the appropriate genre. It may sound crazy but it's seriously awesome being able to filter by genre with 100% accuracy now; Instantly creating a self updating playlist of sorts that doesn't need to be saved and/or have a stupid goofy cryptic name that nobody but you understands.
I wrote out this cool little checklist too, I'll have to whip up a flash and be the successor to
Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music.
Anyways here's your content, completely original. The only preset you'd find here is that squeaky noise (1:06 for example) which was intentionally a sub kick so there. Song is totally loop free too, all of that tribal stuff was sequenced by hand :D.
Nix - Enjoy
Upgrade your brain matter - March 10th
Grab some popcorn, turn off the lights and relax. This will take a while but you'll be richer for the experience.
The Union: The business behind getting high.Torrent from Demonoid.Update: TV link vanished within 24 hours, so here's the official site (trailer in there) and a torrent which I heard may contain a pirated version of the movie, so make sure to stay away from that.
The worst Black History month - March 6th
So I spent most of February with a blocked up ear and no ideas but I've been rehauling my approach to music and grinding away on lots of tutorials so the general quality of stuff on here should get much better and a little more melodic again. Also it's about time I made a proper site so look forward to that in the future too. Until then have some ambient (protip: ambient music isn't for listening, just forget it's even playing for best results and apply directly to the forehead).
Nix - Gone Whaling
They just strut, what the fuck - Feb 2nd
To blow myself here, this is awesome. Sampling from 'Muse - Dead Star' and 'Fatboy Slim - Star 69'. Names are just a freak coincidence, so I called it this:
Nix - Dead Star 69
And then there were two - Jan 15
Well when it rains song ideas it usually pours. This track is like nothing you've heard before; like IDM-step or D'n'i or something. Either way remember how I pioneered this when we're all dancing to it in the future with our jetpacks and space suits.
Nix - She Knows Too Much
Hello 2009 - Jan 14
Alright after a month's worth of unfinished projects here's something with a little polish for you, will be editing this one and updating as we go along.
Nix - Nuking Korea
I might be showing her my O face... - Dec 10
Something a little twisted and groovy, like if Crookers and Deadmau5 ever got together and then made music.
Nix - O Face
Rough, hard, and Painful - Dec 9
Here we go, something much different to shake up all this stale electro house. Maybe I'll be a DnB producer one of these days...
Nix - Painful
My experiments - Dec 8
I've been trying different headspaces for making music and this is what I got. It starts alright but I lost focus near the end. There shouldn't be any more freaky songs like this in the future. I'm going to try using notes again, those were the days.
Nix - Salviation
Darker Harder Weirder Stronger - Dec 7
Finally all settled in, bought all my bits and pieces and got them working so some brand spankin new choons are on the way. Until then I'd like to present to you the tunes that never made it. These are all songs that were just a little too weird, a little too blunt or plain freaky. Here are some of the noisy ones:
Nix - Bad IntentionsNix - Sugar RocketAnd weird DnB light:
Nix - On TopNix - Alphabet SoupSomething short and chill:
Nix - InfectionsAnd the really dark twisted stuff:
Nix - What Happened to the Good Old DaysNix - HolidayNix - Madness (Volume down for this one, this is what I make when I'm tired of making.)
New space - Nov 21
In Vancouver and gradually restoring power to all my studio bits and pieces. Internet to come which means updates will continue to be spotty. Still figuring out the billing system so if you come back on the 24th and find nothing, I'm working on it. Now here's something to get you through the week along with some high bitrate oldies on the music page:
Nix - OverratedNix - FucktricityNix - CanadaIf you're noticing "Canada" doesn't play or open, that's because you're using iTunes which is one of the few players left on the earth that refuses to support .ogg format. Oggs are bad news for corporate music because they're free to use, sell, and contain no limiting DRM protections that prevent you from listening to your music. There are ways to bash iTunes into supporting oggs, or you could play them in VLC, or you could always pull your head out of the sand and download
Winamp.
Soon to come, real music! - Oct 26
Moving to Vancouver tomorrow which means I'll have a real internet connection and the real start of this website. Do what you can to hold onto your seats until then.
We have liftoff! - Oct 24
Awesome, here we are. A real historic moment, except I don't really have any content for you yet. In the meantime, have this:
Nix - Intermission
